Summer Camp Scholarships

Every year since 2005, Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center has been working to bring low-income, at-risk children from the city of Trenton to the farm for our summer day camp. These children are integrated into our regular camp schedule and healthy snacks & transportation are provided at no cost to their families. Over the course of the last few summers, we have seen children overcome their fears of animals, dirts, people, and nature. They learned that insects are not scary and frogs feel comforted if you rub their bellies. As they explore the Farm, get dirty and play safely, they also have a chance to just “be kids” without the responsibility, criticism, and threats of everyday life in the city. We believe that by exposing children to nature, agriculture, and the sources of their food, they will gain a sense of compassion for their environment and each other.

Unit of Study Field Trip Scholarships

In 2010, Fernbrook Farms Education Center expanded our Urban Initiatives to provide programs to children throughout the school year. Our focus has been to have 4th and 5th grade Trenton students get outdoors and experience the wonders of nature first-hand during the school year. Through our Unit of Study Field Trips, our goal is to bring every child in Trenton to Fernbrook Farms at lease twice during their elementary school years.

The Unit of Study Program involves bringing an instructors Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center to teach three on-site classes, and then bring the students to Fernbrook Farms for a full day field trip overflowing with hands-on activities.

Teachers have the choice of four Unit of Study Programs to coordinate with their own curriculum: Wetlands Study, Forest Ecology Study, Farm Study, and Adaptations Study. You can read more about bringing these programs to your school in the Unit of Study section of our website.
